Save Our Children: Pakistan losing battle against hunger, diseas According to the PDH Survey 2006-07, Pakistani children are more likely to die young in rural areas.Najeeb Ahmed Children are dying all over the country for lack of medical facilities and food supplies. Yet no-one is taking their plight seriously. “I lost my three children due to lack of neonatal resources, but no one has helped me so far,” said Prem Chandar, 34, who lost his third baby due to malnutrition in the Goth Haryar village of Mithi, Tharparkar, last month. “Our children are dying due to starvation. Is it not strange? We are a nuclear power but our children do not have sufficient food to eat.” Chandar’s newborn lived only three days. Like the parents of 964 children who died in their infancy, Chandar was unable to save his child. Figures obtained from multiple governmental and non-governmental organisations by  The Express Tribune  reveal that around 352,000 children who are...

Wave of child deaths in Thar desert

Image
KARACHI: Nearly 300 children have died this year in desert communities in southern Pakistan, officials said Wednesday, as poor monsoon rains and livestock diseases have combined to worsen malnutrition. The Thar desert, straddling the Indian border and one of Pakistan's poorest areas, has seen an alarming number of children suffering pneumonia or diarrhoea due to a dangerous mix of drought, poverty and poor health infrastructure. The deaths have prompted criticism for the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), which governs in the southern province of Sindh where part of the desert is located. A total of 496 people, 296 of them children, have died in Thar this year, Taj Haider, a senior PPP official with responsibility for the Thar situation, told AFP. Since the start of October 48 children have died in Thar, according to doctor Abdul Jalil, district health officer for Tharparkar district. This week around 40 children, some in critical condition, are undergoing treatment in a...

Lifeless bodies of children a norm in Thar?

Image
Everyone is worried about the situation unfolding in Tharparkar if you look at the condition of children in Thar then it would not be surprising to see people with open mouths because Tharparkar district is just 400 km away from Pakistan’s largest and financial hub Karachi where the federal and provincial ministers live in a lavish lifestyle surrounded by ‘army’ of guards. The question that everyone needs to answer is that is this situation new? Have we not gone through this situation again and again? I started this blog in March 2011 and after that in every season whether it’s a storm or a drought same news comes from Thar that is ‘Humans and Animals are dying, and there  is nobody to help them.’ It’s either drought or flood in Sindh Sindh: Its either flood or drought! The government does not want to believe that children are dying because of lack of food they blame the weather for the disaster though famine has been largely caused by the changing and unsettled we...

Money to save Thar children spent on sofas

Image
The raid revealed suspected embezzlement and misuse of a grant worth Rs50 million from the Sindh government that was meant to be spent ‘for nutrition and therapeutic needs’.  Over half of this amount – Rs26.4 million – was spent on the procurement of furniture, and Rs15.4 million on the purchase of drugs that have been kept at the DHO office for several months. The government apparatus in Tharparkar has long been blamed for mismanaging the drought that claimed the lives of over 200 people, including children and infants. Hundreds of children died in the first three months of this year, with most of the deaths being attributed to malnutrition and a lack of health facilities at public hospitals. The belated declaration of drought on February 28, the hoarding of subsidised wheat and the long delays in its distribution and failure to address drinking water problems, were other factors that contributed to the situation and the bureaucracy also took the rap for all of them. Misu...

Killing our children

Image
Acull is the selective slaughter of a part of a population. Typically it is used in respect of controlling animal populations, but it is not overstating the case to say that there is currently a cull going on in Pakistan. It is a cull of humans, and specifically human children. Children are dying across the country from what amounts to willful and criminal neglect by this and successive governments. It is a tragedy on a national scale that receives little or no publicity, being reduced to no more than a footnote to the daily news. Research conducted by this newspaper and involving a range of governmental and non-governmental sources reveals that 352,000 children under five die every year in the country . They die from a range of preventable causes. There were 1,800 deaths from measles in the four provinces in 2014. Pakistan has the highest rate globally of first-day deaths and stillbirths at 40.7 per 1,000; a staggering 28,000 women die in childbirth every year. About 50 per cent o...

Over 100 dead due to malnutrition in Pak's Sindh

Image
Over 100 people have reportedly died in Pakistan's Sindh province due to severe malnutrition. A report from Karachi said that a famine-like situation in the province has alarmed the government. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has taken serious notice of the incidents of childrens death in Thar, Sindh, a statement from his office said on Friday, March 7. Sharif has directed National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to immediately get in touch with authorities in Sindh and provide all possible aid and assistance. Children crying TV footage showed crying malnourished children. It was described as famine-type situation. Forced to act after the media outrage, the Sindh government today ordered a probe into the death of children who reportedly died of pneumonia and malnutrition in a stretch of the Thar desert. According to media reports from Mithi, one of the least developed and most remote districts in southern Sindh province, over 100 people have died in the last three months. ...

Dhia Bheel was a beautiful young woman but always looked gloomy and frail. She couldn’t put up with hunger and domestic violence. She jumped into a well with her six-month-old child. I’ve witnessed two suicide cases in the last two months in my tiny village,” says Lado Meghwar, resident of village Meghi Jo Tar in Tharparkar. Dozens of children have reportedly died of malnutrition in this drought-stricken desert district of Sindh this year alone. And psychiatrists believe the persisting famine is creating psychological disorders among the Tharis, leading to suicidal tendencies. In the past 10 months, 40 people have committed suicide in Tharparkar, including two cases of mothers killing themselves along with their children, according to a report prepared by a local NGO,  AWARE . More worrisome are the two cases of minors committing suicide. Thirteen-year-old shepherd Savaee Ghazi Meghwar of Kasbo village, district Nagarparkar, killed himself when his parents did not give him...

PPP Slogan ‘Roti Kapa Makan’ Dies with Ten Hunger Sickened Infants of Thar

Image
THAR – Ten deaths of infant hunger sickened children in the desert of Sindh faded  the echoes of  Roti Kapra Makan  - the party slogan of Pakistan  Peoples  Party (PPP). The dance of death  on hunger sickened infant children in Sindh’s desert continued and now total number of casualties  in last twelve hours mounted to 10 on Monday. The longstanding famine and malnutrition among children is now widely believed to be the mismanagement of PPP’s government in Sindh. Not to forget that  only after three days when Bilawal Bhutto Zardari called off the show-cause notices  issued to Chief Minister of Sindh and minister Manzoor Wasan, another innocent infant child withered due to famine in Mithi Hospital. These deaths mounted the total casualties to 83 within 60 days. However, the irony is that only three days ago the Chairman of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)  Bilawal ...

Sindh govt orders probe after 41 children die in Thar desert

Image
Officials were alarmed by  media reports from Mithi , one of the least developed and most remote districts in southern Sindh province, suggesting that more than 100 people had died because of famine and malnutrition. “It is a very serious matter and we have deputed a senior member of the party and officials to probe into the deaths,” Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah told reporters. The chief minister also ordered the arrest of senior health officials for neglecting their duties, saying they had failed to move the children to hospitals in the bigger cities. Shah said the cause of the deaths would be confirmed by the investigation but apparently pneumonia and malnutrition were among the reasons. The chief minister said the government records showed the death of 41 children but there were fears that the actual number may be higher. The Thar desert begins around 300 kilometres from Karachi and runs up to the border with India, where it joins the Rajasthan de...

In 2012, 2.9 Million newborn babies died within 28 days. Of these, 1 Million babies died oin their first day-and only-day of life. Unless we urgently start to decide to tackle deaths among newborn babies, there is a real danger that progress in reducing child deaths will stall, and we will fail in our ambition to be the generation that can end all preventable child deaths. But, as Ending Newborn Deaths reveals, the crises in even bigger

Children still dying in Thar due to drought: PRF

Image
Mithi district, which usually receives rainfall only during the monsoon season, witnessed no rains during monsoon this year. The rain deficit in parts of district resulted in no agriculture production, shortage of food, and fodder for livestock. The situation aggravated in the months of August, September and November with continuous losses of precious lives of innocent children.  The outbreak of sheep pox and other diseases affected livestock heads. Later, situation turned into severe phase, and till date, scores of children have died due to malnutrition, said an assessment report conducted by Pakistan Relief Foundation (PRF).  The report further said: “It is the prime job of federal government to chalk out pre-disaster strategies to secure the precious lives of people and their properties but if natural disasters came in shape of floods, earthquake or droughts in any nook and corner of country, the sitting federal government should come forward through its concerned ...

Sources said that the patients’ rush in the hospital still continues, as over 40 children seriously ill are presently under treatment. Famine-hit Tharis also facing great difficulties in obtaining the government announced relief amounts from the one government and three private banks in Mithi and the lone private bank in Chachro whose ATM machines often go out order or out of cash, sources said. Besides with the shooting mercury in the summer heat, most of the private relief teams and NGOs have left Tharparkar, while the government relief work moving at snail’s pace further compounding the woes of the people in Tharparkar.
