Wave of child deaths in Thar desert

Image
KARACHI: Nearly 300 children have died this year in desert communities in southern Pakistan, officials said Wednesday, as poor monsoon rains and livestock diseases have combined to worsen malnutrition. The Thar desert, straddling the Indian border and one of Pakistan's poorest areas, has seen an alarming number of children suffering pneumonia or diarrhoea due to a dangerous mix of drought, poverty and poor health infrastructure. The deaths have prompted criticism for the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), which governs in the southern province of Sindh where part of the desert is located. A total of 496 people, 296 of them children, have died in Thar this year, Taj Haider, a senior PPP official with responsibility for the Thar situation, told AFP. Since the start of October 48 children have died in Thar, according to doctor Abdul Jalil, district health officer for Tharparkar district. This week around 40 children, some in critical condition, are undergoing treatment in a...

Lifeless bodies of children a norm in Thar?

Image
Everyone is worried about the situation unfolding in Tharparkar if you look at the condition of children in Thar then it would not be surprising to see people with open mouths because Tharparkar district is just 400 km away from Pakistan’s largest and financial hub Karachi where the federal and provincial ministers live in a lavish lifestyle surrounded by ‘army’ of guards. The question that everyone needs to answer is that is this situation new? Have we not gone through this situation again and again? I started this blog in March 2011 and after that in every season whether it’s a storm or a drought same news comes from Thar that is ‘Humans and Animals are dying, and there  is nobody to help them.’ It’s either drought or flood in Sindh Sindh: Its either flood or drought! The government does not want to believe that children are dying because of lack of food they blame the weather for the disaster though famine has been largely caused by the changing and unsettled we...

Money to save Thar children spent on sofas

Image
The raid revealed suspected embezzlement and misuse of a grant worth Rs50 million from the Sindh government that was meant to be spent ‘for nutrition and therapeutic needs’.  Over half of this amount – Rs26.4 million – was spent on the procurement of furniture, and Rs15.4 million on the purchase of drugs that have been kept at the DHO office for several months. The government apparatus in Tharparkar has long been blamed for mismanaging the drought that claimed the lives of over 200 people, including children and infants. Hundreds of children died in the first three months of this year, with most of the deaths being attributed to malnutrition and a lack of health facilities at public hospitals. The belated declaration of drought on February 28, the hoarding of subsidised wheat and the long delays in its distribution and failure to address drinking water problems, were other factors that contributed to the situation and the bureaucracy also took the rap for all of them. Misu...

Killing our children

Acull is the selective slaughter of a part of a population. Typically it is used in respect of controlling animal populations, but it is not overstating the case to say that there is currently a cull going on in Pakistan. It is a cull of humans, and specifically human children. Children are dying across the country from what amounts to willful and criminal neglect by this and successive governments. It is a tragedy on a national scale that receives little or no publicity, being reduced to no more than a footnote to the daily news. Research conducted by this newspaper and involving a range of governmental and non-governmental sources reveals that 352,000 children under five die every year in the country . They die from a range of preventable causes. There were 1,800 deaths from measles in the four provinces in 2014. Pakistan has the highest rate globally of first-day deaths and stillbirths at 40.7 per 1,000; a staggering 28,000 women die in childbirth every year. About 50 per cent o...

Over 100 dead due to malnutrition in Pak's Sindh

Over 100 people have reportedly died in Pakistan's Sindh province due to severe malnutrition. A report from Karachi said that a famine-like situation in the province has alarmed the government. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has taken serious notice of the incidents of childrens death in Thar, Sindh, a statement from his office said on Friday, March 7. Sharif has directed National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to immediately get in touch with authorities in Sindh and provide all possible aid and assistance. Children crying TV footage showed crying malnourished children. It was described as famine-type situation. Forced to act after the media outrage, the Sindh government today ordered a probe into the death of children who reportedly died of pneumonia and malnutrition in a stretch of the Thar desert. According to media reports from Mithi, one of the least developed and most remote districts in southern Sindh province, over 100 people have died in the last three months. ...
